Apple Music on Android Gets Support for Spatial and Lossless Audio

Recently Apple has launched its two new features to its Apple Music iOS app and now streams music in spatial and lossless audio quality. The two new features are only arriving on the iPhone, iPad, and the Mac, with support for certain AirPods and Beats earphones.

During the announcements, Apple didn’t mention anything about the spatial and lossless audio quality features for Apple Music Android. But it seems that Apple has started rolling out the updates for the Android platform as well.

The users who have been waiting to listen to Dolby Atmos music on Apple Music app or to experience the spatial and lossless audio feature, you need to sign up for the beta program to experience those features or you can wait until the main and stable update rolls out and registering for the beta version isn’t easy either, the user has to get a slot which is a lot difficult.

According to a report from 9to5Google, Apple Music on an Android handset will show the Dolby Atmos label alongside a title only on compatible devices. Apple is yet to clarify the criteria for the compatible devices. The report also claims that Apple Music app will include a separate playlist for the spatial and lossless audio and the users will be able to identify the supported songs from the Dolby Atmos badge on the list of tracks and songs.

To start listening to Lossless Audio, subscribers using the latest version of Apple Music can turn it on in Settings > Music > Audio Quality. They can choose different resolutions like Cellular, Wi-Fi, or Only for Download. The lossless music on Apple Music is also available to Android users who have enrolled for the beta. The users will experience four audio options which include the following.

  • High Efficiency: AAC with low data usage (Cellular only)
  • High Quality: AAC 256 kbps
  • Lossless: ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz
  • High-Resolution Lossless: ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz

Among the above four options, the Lossless and High resolution lossless will consume huge amounts of data, so make sure to have an unlimited plan or a stable Wi-Fi connection to stream and download music that you desire. Moreover, the spatial audio supported songs will be on the home screen of the Apple Music app such that no single user will miss them.
